Shore Chan DePumpo LLP is pleased to announce that Barry D Burgdorf, former Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for the UT System, has been named Special Counsel to the firm.

Mr. Burgdorf was appointed Vice Chancellor and General Counsel for the UT System in February 2005. In this role, he managed all of UT System legal affairs and the 38 attorneys within the Office of General Counsel who staff the legal function. Barry led UT System's efforts to commercialize university created technology, including the establishment of the Horizon Fund, UT System's $20 million and growing fund investing in university start-ups. He also managed the Compliance (including Information Technology Security) and Real Estate functions and served on the Chancellor's executive management team. Additionally, Barry worked directly with all 15 UT institutions to serve each and their varied legal and business needs.

Mr. Burgdorf is also a shareholder of Beatty Bangle Strama PC, an Austin-based law firm specializing in several fields, including public interest, government relations, and education. Barry is also currently serving as a strategic advisor and outside General Counsel to Plano-based VuCOMP which designs and develops computer aided detection systems for automatic analysis of medical images.

Prior to his appointment as Vice Chancellor and General Counsel, Mr. Burgdorf practiced at the Austin office of the law firm of Vinson & Elkins LLP as of counsel from 1998 to 2000 and partner from 2001 to 2005 where his practice included private equity and venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings, regulation and compliance, joint ventures and strategic partnerships, and general corporate governance. He served as General Counsel of Samsung Austin Semiconductor LLC from 1996-1998. As Samsung's first General Counsel, Mr. Burgdorf organized their legal department and then managed its operations. Prior to his position as General Counsel at Samsung Austin, Mr. Burgdorf spent 6 years in the Austin office of Vinson & Elkins as a business litigator focusing his practice on antitrust matters, securities fraud defense, telecom industry disputes and other complex federal court litigation.

"We are very pleased that Barry has agreed to join Shore Chan DePumpo in our efforts to help universities and research institutions around the world develop, commercialize and enforce their intellectual property assets," said SCD partner Michael Shore.

"Top universities are faced with the need to both protect its intellectual property while at the same time maintain a collaborative atmosphere within the scientific community. I intend to draw upon my unique experience and expertise to help the firm and its clients balance those interests," added Mr. Burgdorf.

Mr. Burgdorf is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin (BBA in finance and international business, 1985; JD with honors, 1990). He received his MBA from Southern Methodist University in 1986.
